I have ALWAYS had a thing for office supplies. It was not something I particularly bragged about, I wouldn’t even say it was something I talked to with other people about. It was just this deep comfort that came with purchasing and using the silliest things – post it notes, pens, the world’s most incredible stapler. The top of the office supply food chain for me is pens. Pens are the thing I use the most and the thing I find myself purchasing with the most frequency. Since Jill and I took up Bullet Journaling almost two years ago, pens have even more meaning in my life. Bullet Journal pens are a BIG deal y’all! I am a totally junky for colorful, long lasting, pretty pens. I know I’m not alone in this! I get that you too are secretly harboring lusts about pens that might make some blush. I also know the rabbit hole of Amazon and how buying pens that just aren’t what you thought they would be can be SO damn frustrating. With that in mind I wanted to share with you my current favorite pens and why I love them ever so much.
The Go To Pen With A Rainbow Of Options: Stabilo 8830-1 88 Point 30 Color Wallet
Do I NEED 30 different colors of the same pen? Probably not. Do I WANT 30 different colors of the same pen? Yes, yes I do. I have tried a lot of other fine tip colored pens, but the Stabilo 88-point pens are my hands down favorite. They are long, like longer than you would think they should be, and that did take some getting used to at first. But! They are thing and the line is lovely and it takes A LOT of use for the tip to get dull. I am a color coder in my BuJo and these are perfect for that. I have a color key after my index that helps me keep all the many projects, jobs and personal life stuff in some sort of order. I like the fact that I can take a peek at my weekly spread and know where the bulk of my time is being spent just by what color is most dominate on the page. I also really love the feeling this pen has when I’m writing. The ink is so smooth coming out, there is not drag on the page at all! The colors are vibrant and varied as well. The 30 pack does come with several colors I never use (most of them are the neon colors – just too hard to read, but can be great if you’re someone who colors or draws a lot in your Bujo) but it also gives me enough variety of color that I don’t feel confused by having to use similar colors for separate projects. Honestly, I just can’t recommend these enough!
Back In Black: Sakura 30062 6-Piece Pigma Micron Ink Pen Set, Black
So, you would think with a 30 pack of pens that totally includes a black pen, and the fact that I don’t use a black pen for all that much in my BuJo I wouldn’t be all weird about the black pens that I do use, right? No. Wrong. OF COURSE I’m a total freak when it comes to the black pens I use. I need various tip widths! I need amazing black pens for when I artistically write the date at the top of each page! I AM A WOMAN WITH NEEDS!!! And the Pigma Micron set of varied width pens is totally my jam. There is something SO alluring to me about them. I have a flat out love affair with the 01 pen. It is freaking perfection when lettering – especially the delicate beginnings of a lovely lettering project. Not that I am lettering more than the day of the week in my BuJo right now – though the idea of getting back into lettering is something that is always on my mind. But right now, it’s just a time thing. I simply don’t have the time to write pretty things in my BuJo. I barely have time to make the weekly layout that keeps me sane. That said, I love using the thicker 05 or the 08 pen for the outlines I make in my weekly spread. They are bold enough to keep things beautifully separated. They also make a great “check off the shit you got done” pen. There is something SO satisfying about putting a check in a box on my to-do list. And this pen makes it seem so authoritative with its dark, bold stroke! Go ahead! Check something off your list! Feel the release of endorphins and pat yourself on the back for choosing such lovely pens.
Far Superior to ANY Zoo Animal: Zebra NC5 Highlighter Mildliner, 5 Color Set (WKT7-5C-NC)
Oh, beautiful highlighters! I adore you! I have every single color Zebra makes of these magical highlighters. I discovered these when doing a deep dive into the bullet journal hashtag on Instagram. (Seriously, do not follow any Bujo hashtag unless you have a couple hours and a hundred spare dollars. It’s office supply porn I tell you!) I use these pens a lot for habit tracking, making my weekly spread SUPER pretty, and separating things on my daily pages. If something is MAJORLY important then it gets highlighted so it doesn’t get lost in the crazy long list of stuff that needs to get done every day. I also use these for writing notes to my kids and making cards I send out cute. They make me real happy – and I am sure they will make you happy too. So… go get them. :)
Keeping It Together: Seltzer Goods Pencil Pouches
If you’re going to carry a metric ton of pens around with you, you should probably have something to carry them in. I found this gem of a pen pouch at The Paper Source in Roseville (another place I can’t seem to NOT spend money at) but they have SO many more on their website that you can buy directly from them. I love that it’s big enough for my pen collection, but not SO big that you can’t fit it in your purse or laptop bag. And it’s SUPER sturdy and well built. Is it sad that I want a couple more just so I can change my pen pouch with my mood? Yeah, I have a problem. I get it.
So those are my go to’s when it comes to pens these days. I have sets in my purse and sets at my office because I am insane. What about you? Do you have a pen you just can’t live without? Share your favorites in the comments!
