I Apologize For All The Songs That Might Be Stuck In Your Head

It’s not that I don’t like the song All I Want For Christmas is You…it’s just that I’d rather Nora (or my 11yo) sing it than Mariah Carey. I also need a 10 year break from Feliz Navidad and Christmas Shoes. I…well, I just can’t you guys.

The funny thing is I LOVE Christmas music. Like, REALLY REALLY love it. But there are just those songs that make you want to punch someone in their Merry Christmas whenever it makes a rotation on the holiday playlist. In fact, I usually can’t listen to the all Christmas all the time radio stations in the area because they like to lure me in with Bing and Frank and then BAM! I get smacked upside the head by David Hasselhoff singing a Christmas song medley. (I’m not even going to link to that. NO WAY.)

Apparently I’m a crotchety old man when it comes to Christmas music. Get off my lawn and all that.

Okay, okay…it’s not that I don’t love more current holiday music. I really do. But it’s a lot harder to navigate that mine field when Jose, Mariah and David are just wandering around the Christmas stations unattended. Dangerous!

So this is me. Admitting that I listen to the Christmas Blues Pandora station. Almost exclusively. Because the earworm trifecta from above never shows up. And if they try? I can “thumbs down” that business.

Even if I prefer the Rat Pack to bring me my Christmas music, I most love the feeling of our house when the holiday music is blaring. New and old alike, I love that my kids sing along – that we all seem to be singing constantly. I also tend to quiz my kids to see if they recognize who might be singing the song playing. It’s hilarious to see what guesses they come up with when the voice they’re hearing is way out of context.  Although, a warning before playing this game with your own kids: 1) you’re going to feel very old at some of their guesses and 2) you’re going to be appalled that they didn’t recognize some very important voices and you’ll feel like a parenting failure. Maybe.

So tell me…do you have a Christmas song that drives you insane? (Am I the only old-man-get-off-my-lawn-Scrooge?) Does your family have some holiday favorites that you can’t live without?
